Inlays/Onlays: Less Invasive Than Complete Crowns

cosmetic dental Friendswood

Restorative dentistry has advanced significantly over the years and there are now several effective ways to fix decayed teeth. In today’s post, we are going to concentrate on two similar types of restorations: dental inlays and onlays.

Where possible, an inlay or an onlay can be a less-invasive substitute for a complete crown and either one is usually more affordable than a porcelain crown procedure.

Inlays/onlays are “indirect fillings,” meaning that they are fabricated in a lab and placed whole on the tooth. A traditional “direct filling” is applied to the tooth while the material is malleable and then shaped by the dentist.

An inlay is used to repair the surface of a damaged tooth, generally to fill a small cavity or a natural pit that is at risk for decay.

Typically porcelain or composite resin are used for inlays; these materials are heavy-duty and look very natural because the color can be matched exactly to the surrounding teeth. An inlay is exactly fitted to your tooth and looks, feels, and functions like the original tooth.

An onlay covers a larger part of the tooth. Because they cover such a large area of the tooth, they are often referred to as partial crowns. Onlays are ordinarily applied to the biting surface of the tooth. Just like inlays, they are accurately fitted to the damaged part of the tooth. Composite resin and porcelain are also the main materials used to create an onlay. As mentioned before, inlays and onlays serve a key role in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

At David C. Montz, DDS, we provide unmatched dental care including inlays and onlays. If you have one or more teeth that has a cavity, crack, or excessive wear, call 832-895-5120 to make an appointment today.

Celebrity Smiles In Friendswood

Veneers in Friendswood How do celebrities obtain brilliant white smiles that are always ready for the red carpet or a close-up? Do they avoid coffee? Not likely. Every star-watching magazine is full of pictures of famous people holding Starbucks cups. Do they avoid tobacco? Some probably do, but many actors and fashion models with dazzling white smiles are smokers.

Very few people (famous and non-famous alike) with perfect teeth were born with them. (…Sure, no one is born with teeth, but you know what I mean.) Celebrities have perfect smiles because they have undergone cosmetic dentistry.

Guess what? You can also have a smile like a supermodel or television news anchor because Dr. David Montz has as much experience and training in advanced cosmetic dentistry as any Hollywood cosmetic dentist.

Dr. Montz has been providing smile makeovers for Friendswood and Manviel dental patients since 1997. Tooth whitening is the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedure in Pearland. Tooth bleaching quickly perks up your teeth and makes you feel like smiling all the time!

Porcelain veneers are used often in Alvin cosmetic dental offices because they correct many problems including misshapen teeth, cracks and chips, and discolored teeth. Teeth that have been worn down extensively can also be repaired with veneers. Preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer is minimally invasive. The latest veneers do not require the removal of healthy enamel. Another plus: veneers are usually less expensive than complete crowns!

Tooth bleaching and veneers are just two of the many cosmetic dental procedures performed at David C. Montz, DDS. Schedule a Friendswood cosmetic dental consultation today by calling 832-895-5120. At our office, you will always receive VIP treatment, without the annoying paparazzi!

We look forward to helping you achieve a celebrity smile.

(Note that the celebrities pictured above are not affiliated with our site; they just have great smiles!)

4 Tips For A Younger Looking Smile

THERE ARE COUNTLESS methods we use to try and turn back the clock on our appearance. Whether it’s hip wardrobes and hairstyles or costly cosmetic surgeries, people go to great lengths to recapture the look and feeling of their youth.

Despite all of these anti-aging fads and gimmicks, studies show your smile can do more to make you look younger than anything else!

Good Oral Hygiene Keeps Your Smile Looking Younger, Longer

The simplest thing you can do to keep Father Time at bay is to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly promotes healthy teeth and gums and keeps your smile looking and feeling clean. If we ignore these simple habits, we put our smiles at risk of harmful bacteria which can lead to unsightly effects such as:

  • Cavities,
  • Tooth discoloration or tooth loss,
  • And periodontal disease.

Maintaining good oral health throughout your life doesn’t just preserve the appearance of your smile, but it can preserve your overall health too. Bleeding gums caused by periodontal disease can allow bacteria from your mouth to enter your bloodstream and affect other parts of the body. Research suggests gum disease can increase our risk for serious health problems, including…

  • Diabetes
  • Endocarditis and cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Strokes
  • Alzheimer’s Disease

For a few tips on how to floss properly to fight off that harmful bacteria, check out the video below!

Brighten Your Smile With Professional Tooth Whitening

Even when you take good care of your teeth, over time they naturally yellow. Micro-fractures, thinning enamel, and built-up stains all make your teeth look duller and older. But, that can be changed with tooth whitening!

There are several tooth whitening solutions, each with their own unique benefits. From over the counter whitening strips to in-office whitening treatments, we can help you decide which whitening solution is best for your smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry Can Give You The Look You Want

Whether you need just few touch-ups or would like an amazing dental makeover, cosmetic dentistry can provide exactly the look you want. Cosmetic dentistry has both therapeutic and aesthetic benefits. Treatment can repair your teeth and correct your bite, and at the same time give you the gorgeous smile you’ve always wanted!

Be Confident In Your Smile

One of the best ways to appear more youthful is to smile more! This can start a wonderful cycle too! Smiling more can actually make you happier, and make you want to smile more.

We love our patients and love seeing your bright shining smiles each day. If you have any questions about how we can give you a healthier, more beautiful smile, give us a call and set an appointment to visit our practice or let us know in the comments below!

Thank you for brightening our day.

Correcting Severe Dental Problems In Friendswood

dentist-gemEach separate restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in Friendswood can address a specific dental problem. For example, a porcelain veneer can correct the surface of a tooth that is discolored or slightly misshapen. Dental bonding can fill a small chip in an otherwise healthy tooth.

Some Pearland dental problems are more extensive and require a combination of procedures. Crown restoration combined with soft tissue grafts can restore a severely decayed tooth with the root exposed. A bone graft and dental implant can restore a missing tooth in an area where the jaw bone has receded. Orthodontia followed by tooth bleaching totally transforms a smile by straightening and whitening.

What is the difference between tooth bleaching and whitening? Whitening is the term for procedures which remove surface stains to restore the degree of natural lightness. Bleaching goes even further by lightening teeth beyond their natural shade. That’s right: you don’t have to resign yourself to yellow teeth even if they have been that way your whole life! The natural shade of your teeth, by the way, like your skin and hair color, is determined by genetics.

Some Pearland smiles have been gleaming for years by regular whitening. You can maintain the whiteness of your teeth just as you maintain your fitness level. (Of course it is a lot easier to make a quick visit to your Pearland dentist once a year for whitening touch-ups than sweating in a gym several times a week!)

We live in an age where severe dental problems can be permanently corrected. You don’t have to participate in a TV makeover show in Hollywood to access these premium cosmetic dental procedures. They are available right here in Pearland, Friendswood and Alvin. David C. Montz has the same advanced training and extensive experience as the dentists who keep the smiles of famous actors and musicians camera-ready.

Whitening vs Bleaching At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry In Friendswood

Whitening vs Bleaching At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates - Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry In Pearland

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental service that David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry provides in-office or through a take home kit. Results vary, but most patients observe significant lightening that lasts up to a year. Our Friendswood teeth whitening patients affirm that a whiter smile improves self confidence and can take years of wear and discoloration away to reveal a brighter smile.

Teeth whitening and teeth bleaching, however, mean two different things. Surface cracks and stains occur on tooth enamel, exposing the yellower dentin below the surface. Discoloration can be the result of the natural aging process, illness, genetics, or dark colored food or drink. Foods and beverages that are both dark colored and acidic – like wine, coffee, and tomato sauce  – have even greater staining power.

Teeth whitener can refer to any product used to remove stains from tooth enamel: toothpaste, do it yourself strips, and some mouthwashes are safe and affordable and can improve teeth with continued, regular use. The extent of whitening varies, and it takes dedicated,  use to see results.

Whitening products that do not contain bleach can usually make teeth two to four shades lighter. These are a good choice for Houston men and women with sensitive teeth and gums that can react to products containing harsher whitening chemicals. David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry guides pregnant or nursing mothers to pick the non-bleach whitening products.

Teeth bleaching is used to describe a tooth whitening product that contains a form of bleach, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, in varying concentrations. For best results, teeth bleaching should be done in-office by your Texas cosmetic dentist. Bleaching can ordinarily achieve more noticeable results, sometimes up to seven shades lighter. Intrinsic stains on the dentin, as well as surface stains can be effectively lightened under an experienced Friendswood dentist’s supervision.

Multi-Procedural Visits in Friendswood

Multi-Procedure Dental Visits in PearlandIf you are planning extensive cosmetic dental work, you may be wondering whether to do it all at once or one procedure at a time over an extended period. Here are some factors to consider:

Cost
In the long run, It is less expensive to do it all at once. At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry in Friendswood, we are able to complete several procedures in one visit. We know that complete smile transformations are a significant investment for most Houston residents. We would be happy to discuss affordable dentistry financing options. Call us at 832-895-5120 to schedule a no-pressure consultation.

Time
With the latest materials and cosmetic dental techniques, healing times are shorter than in the past. However, some procedures such as bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, root canals, and dental implants may require a healing period.

It is easier physically and psychologically to have the fewest possible visits to your Friendswood dentist. You should also consider how your dental visits and necessary healing periods will impact your employment and family life. You will have less down time if you receive several procedures at once.

Aesthetic Results
While we routinely achieve great outcomes when doing a smile makeover in steps, porcelain restorations are best fabricated in the same “batch” for the most precise color matching.

Sedation Dentistry
When you come in for a smile analysis, we can discuss oral sedation dentistry. Many Friendswood and Alvin cosmetic dental patients benefit from this safe and effective solution for pain and anxiety management. Conscious sedation is especially helpful for procedures such as multiple wisdom teeth extractions and dental implant placement.
