Getting Ready For A Dental Implant in Friendswood?

dental implant in Friendswood

We believe that every patient deserves a sensational smile whether it takes porcelain veneers, sleep apnea, or sedation dentistry. Today’s post will focus on the preparation needed for a dental implant in Friendswood. Consider calling 832-895-5120 today for your own personal consultation and to receive one-on-one information specific to your needs.

What is a Dental Implant?

Simply stated, a dental implant in Friendswood is a permanent post placed into the jawbone with attached abutment and artificial tooth. A tooth implant can also support a dental bridge or denture.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Implants?

Ideal candidates for a tooth implant include patients with missing teeth, dentures, or bridges with healthy oral tissue, ample bone structure, and proper health for bone healing. For most of our patients who seek tooth restoration, a dental implant is a great option.

What Preparation is Needed?

An initial visit with Montz and Maher Dental Group is the first step. For this evaluation, be sure to bring pertinent medical information, your current medication list, and questions you have about the process. Dental implants take multiple visits and the process is different for each person so be sure you understand all the particulars. If we determine that you don’t have enough bone structure at the implant site, bone grafting may be required.

How Do I Ensure Successful Healing?

Avoid drugs or medications not approved by your dental caregiver. Eat soft foods for a while to give your mouth time to heal after the implant is inserted. Keep the mouth cleaned properly around the site. Follow the counsel given at each visit. Stay healthy by eating a nutritious diet and getting proper rest. Avoid smoking or other tobacco products.

How Do I Care for Dental Implants?

Caring for implants is not much different from caring for existing teeth. Be sure to abstain from damaging, detrimental habits such as chewing hard items (ice or candy), and seek treatment for teeth grinding if it is a concern for you. See your dentist regularly. Keep the implant and gum tissue around the implant clean just as you do with your original teeth.

The complete treatment process can take a few months from consultation to placement of the abutment and artificial tooth. At your initial consultation, we can discuss the cost of treatment and think about financing options. Visit us for more details about our services including Invisalign braces, veneers and teeth whitening.

Dental Anxiety? Sedation Dentistry in Friendswood

Sedation Dentistry Manviel

Does your heart start pounding at the thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you pass a dental practice? With sedation dentistry in Friendswood, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Many of our patients at David C. Montz DDS, PA and Associates struggle with dental anxiety. And many of them have found a solution in sedation dentistry.

Let’s define our terms and set the parameters. ‘Sleep dentistry’ and ‘oral conscious sedation’ are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. There are three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Laughing Gas
The first is laughing gas. Laughing gas has been used in cosmetic dentistry for decades because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, and wears off quickly. If you need a little help getting through dental procedures, but don’t want to be out cold, laughing gas may be the best choice.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation doesn’t start working as quickly as laughing gas, but it helps most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications don’t usually lead to complete unconsciousness. Most patients are able to answer any questions put to them by the dentist, but they’ll have no memory of the procedure when it’s over. If you elect oral conscious sedation, you’ll need a ride home afterward.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery. Most patients are unaware to what is going on in their mouths. IV sedation is often used for procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, and multi-procedure smile makeovers. The sedation will wear off shortly after the procedure, but you’ll be groggy and will need a ride home.

When you’re a patient at David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates, your comfort is a top priority. And we always put safety first. We have long experience in treating patients with dental anxiety.

Who’s Afraid Of The Big, Bad…Dentist?

sleep dentistry Houston

People that are plagued with dental phobia (Dentophobia) may take comfort in the fact that it is a fairly common diagnosable mental condition. At least they know they are not alone and that the medical community takes it seriously.

Phobias like Pteromerhanophobia: (the fear of flying) and Acrophobibia (the fear of heights) can be challenging, but a person can live a perfectly healthy life without getting on a plane or riding an elevator to the top of the Chrysler Building.

A person who suffers from dental phobia or dental anxiety is at risk of falling into a vicious cycle of worsening oral health.

Fear causes the person to steer clear of dental checkups for years. When a minor dental problem (like a miniature cavity) advances until it contacts a nerve and causes pain, the patient is forced to visit the dentist.

At this point, the needed treatment is a major procedure (possibly an extraction followed by a dental implant). The treatment reinforces the dental phobia and, once again, the patient stays away from the dentist’s office. That’s how some men and women end up losing teeth at a relatively young age.

Experts believe that the prevalence of dental phobia may be as high as one in four men and women. Are you one of them?

At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, we want to help nervous patients successfully overcome or at least manage their trepidation so they can withstand twice-yearly checkups and cleanings. Preventive dentistry is the best way to protect teeth and gums.

If you haven’t had a dental examination in a while, please schedule a consultation. You can communicate with Dr. Montz about the many options available including behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, and conscious sedation (sleep dentistry).

If you dread going to the dentist, there is hope. We have successfully treated many patients just like you. We invite you to request a consultation today.

Keeping Patients Calm Since 1997

sleep dentistry Friendswood

Are you or a family member distressed about going to the dentist? Has a past experience with pain or discomfort caused you to start panicking when you think about having your teeth worked on? Have you neglected going to the dentist and fear the amount of work that might need to be carried out?

If your past or current situation is causing a lot of uneasiness, there are options available to calm your fear and reduce (or completely eliminate) your pain with the needed procedures. Oral sedation (sometimes called sleep dentistry) has helped countless Houston dental patients calmly undergo dental treatment. It is not an experimental procedure but has been used safely in various forms since the 1800s.

To discuss sleep dentistry, call David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry at 832-895-5120 to schedule a no-pressure consultation. Dr. Montz will explain your sedation options and answer any questions. If you choose sedation, Dr. Montz will refer you to a specialist if necessary (depending on the type of sedation used).

It is important to understand the difference between topical analgesics and sedation which are used both alone and simultaneously. Analgesics help numb the gums and nerves connected with your teeth so you don’t feel the pain. Sedation medications affect the nervous system and bring a feeling of peace and relaxation. You may choose to be minimally sedated, where you are quiet but still awake, or decide on general anesthesia which renders you completely unconscious. Together, these two solutions dramatically improve the treatment experience for patients suffering from dental anxiety, a very common condition.

Regardless of the type and level of sedation you decide to use, Dr. Montz will proceed with patience and understanding. Oral sedation aids in making your dental visit relaxed so you can treat all of your dental troubles and restore your health. Taking care of dental caries, infections, and other urgent problems brings peace of mind and reduces the risk of further damage including tooth loss.

David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry in Friendswood is passionate about oral health and complete patient satisfaction from the first visit through completion of treatment. We offer exceptional dental care including sedation dentistry, CEREC dental crowns and porcelain veneers.
