Healthy Teeth in Friendswood: Do You Eat A Smile-Healthy Diet?

Healthy Teeth in Friendswood

Do you have healthy teeth in Friendswood? Having a healthy smile can sometimes be a matter of watching what you eat and brushing your teeth regularly. Today’s post explains how specific foods and eating habits affect our smile.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth into acids. It is the acids that begin to attack enamel and initiate decay for people of all ages. Fruits have a high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing so they aren’t really taboo. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes and pies that you have to worry about.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to limit the acidic effects. It is wise to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken, nuts, and milk. The calcium and phosphorus will advance tooth remineralization, improving your healthy teeth in Friendswood.

Timing of Meals
The more often you eat the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be moderated by picking healthy snacks. Also, keep in mind, the later at night that you eat, the more likely you are to not only eat unhealthy foods but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

3 Problems Which May Require A Root Canal in Friendswood

Root Canal in Friendswood

Hello, let’s talk about the root canal procedure or endodontic therapy in dentist-speak. Root canals are often feared, but they can allow patients to keep a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted. It is important that dental patients know what is happening during this procedure, as it can sometimes cause anxiety among patients.

Importance of a Root Canal in Friendswood

At the center of each tooth is a very small tissue called the pulp. The thread-like tissue can become damaged due to a tooth injury, a very deep cavity, or a crack in the tooth. If this tissue becomes damaged or infected, it can build up at the root tip inside the jawbone and form an abscess. If left untreated, this can actually destroy the bone around the tooth and cause serious discomfort. This is why a root canal in Friendswood is vital to your health.

The Root Canal Procedure

When an endodontist, oral surgeon, or general dentist performs a root canal in Friendswood, the damaged pulp is removed. The space that is left is cleaned and then it is shaped and filled. This eliminates the need for a diseased tooth to be pulled. If we had to remove the tooth, then it would require continued cosmetic dentistry to fill in the gap. We hope that today’s article has helped you better understand this effective and sometimes necessary procedure. Our practice believes that accurate dental information is important. At David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry we offer dental services such as sedation dentistry, CEREC dental crowns, porcelain veneers, and teeth whitening. If you have questions about general dentistry or root canals, give us a call at 832-895-5120.

Give Me Some Air: Advanced Dentistry in League City

Advanced Dentistry in League City How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists uncovered skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.

Though advanced dentistry in League City would not be possible without drilling, the high-pitched drone of a dental drill can make many patients’ hearts pound. However, there is another way cosmetic dentists can remove tooth decay.

Advanced Dentistry in League City

This treatment is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the decayed tooth structure.

The many merits of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for dentists and patients alike. Because air abrasion is typically painless, the necessity for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure.

Patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t create that whiny sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less daunting technique for young patients or those with dental anxiety. Air abrasion is frequently quicker and more exact than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.

Oral Health in League City Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. Products like Red Bull, Rockstar, and Monster are cocktails of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding chemicals. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color. We are especially concerned that teens do not understand the major oral health risks associated with these drinks. Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

Don’t think that you’re saving your teeth by limiting yourself to carbonated drinks or fruit juices, because these drinks also contain acids that can oral health in League City. If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Dental Hygiene in Pearland: Fight The Evil Cavity-Causing Sorceress

dental hygiene in Pearland

Your child’s smartphone or tablet could be another essential tool to help them establish effective dental hygiene in Pearland. A mobile app called Toothsavers was introduced in 2014 by a coalition of organizations dedicated to public health.

In the intriguing Toothsavers game, designed for children ages 3 – 6, kids try to save characters from an evil sorceress who inflicts cavities and other detrimental mouth miseries on residents of her kingdom. Players use their fingers to ‘clean’ the characters’ teeth in the game. The game is designed to encourage children to brush correctly for two minutes, two times a day and create awareness in young children of the importance of proper oral hygiene.

Toothsavers was created by the American Dental Association and Ad Council in partnership with 35 other organizations.

“Mobile technology plays a major role in influencing young people’s behavior and is a great fit for this campaign. We’re thrilled to release our first mobile game, which represents our ongoing efforts to use technology to promote health, education and well-being. We look forward to using this app to help kids maintain healthy oral health habits, and have fun while doing it!Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. 1

The game allows kids to time and track their tooth brushing and even triggers alerts to remind users when it’s time to brush. As part of the game, users watch fun, two-minute instructional videos while they brush their teeth in the real world. A new character is unlocked each day a player watches a video while brushing morning and night. The free app can be downloaded at the App Store, Google Play, and at http://2min2x.org/.

In addition to proper tooth brushing, establishing a relationship with a trusted family dentist is vital for your child’s dental hygiene in Pearland. If you are looking for a friendly and gentle family dentist in the Friendswood area, we invite you to schedule a consultation. We can advise you on dental issues relevant to our youngest patients including thumb-sucking, sealants, mouth protection for children’s sports, orthodontia, and fluoride supplementation.

Oral Health in Friendswood: Beating Horrible Halitosis

Oral Health in Friendswood

Welcome to the dental blog of Montz and Maher Dental Group – Family, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. We’d like to take a few minutes to share with you some facts about bad breath, also known as Halitosis, and oral health in Friendswood.

Brushing just the teeth may not remove bits of food between the teeth and up in the gums. Bacteria can grow and produce odors from hidden locations that can only be cleaned with floss. Gently brushing the gums, sides of the mouth and the tongue in addition to the teeth may make a significant difference. Also, the food you are eating can influence the odor in your mouth. Onions, garlic, and coffee are likely to cause bad breath no matter how much time is logged brushing.

Other Factors in Producing Bad Breath

Illness, infection, and allergies can all cause a lack of saliva which in turn upset the control of bacteria in the mouth and have a negative effect on oral health in Friendswood. Diabetes, kidney failure, radiation therapy, liver malfunction, dry mouth, or even a head cold can cause an odor. The bacteria balance in the mouth is ever-changing. Finally, dentures or a removable appliance may also carry bacteria that needs to be cleaned and freshened up on a regular basis. Here are a few tips on improving oral health in Friendswood if you have dentures.

  1. Brush and floss the teeth as well as brush the tongue, gums, and sides of the mouth.
  2. Enjoy onions and garlic a little less.
  3. Stay on top of health issues.
  4. Keep dentures clean.

At Montz and Maher Dental Group, we offer porcelain veneers, sleep apnea, sedation dentistry, teeth whitening, and CEREC dental crowns just to name a few of our services.

Dental Anxiety? Sedation Dentistry in Friendswood

Sedation Dentistry Manviel

Does your heart start pounding at the thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you pass a dental practice? With sedation dentistry in Friendswood, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Many of our patients at David C. Montz DDS, PA and Associates struggle with dental anxiety. And many of them have found a solution in sedation dentistry.

Let’s define our terms and set the parameters. ‘Sleep dentistry’ and ‘oral conscious sedation’ are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. There are three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Laughing Gas
The first is laughing gas. Laughing gas has been used in cosmetic dentistry for decades because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, and wears off quickly. If you need a little help getting through dental procedures, but don’t want to be out cold, laughing gas may be the best choice.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation doesn’t start working as quickly as laughing gas, but it helps most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications don’t usually lead to complete unconsciousness. Most patients are able to answer any questions put to them by the dentist, but they’ll have no memory of the procedure when it’s over. If you elect oral conscious sedation, you’ll need a ride home afterward.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery. Most patients are unaware to what is going on in their mouths. IV sedation is often used for procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, and multi-procedure smile makeovers. The sedation will wear off shortly after the procedure, but you’ll be groggy and will need a ride home.

When you’re a patient at David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates, your comfort is a top priority. And we always put safety first. We have long experience in treating patients with dental anxiety.

For more information about sedation dentistry, call David C. Montz DDS, PA & Associates. We also practice general and family dentistry.
